Chow Down USA: Brunch & Tapas in San Francisco

This is a sponsored post; all opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting those who support Chow Down USA!

If you’ve read my About Me page, you know that Chow Down USA started purely as a food blog. Back in my hometown of San Francisco, it began as a way to document all the restaurants my friends and I visited for ABC Dining. San Francisco is a culinary paradise, and on a recent trip back after a wedding in Anaheim, I couldn’t resist checking out a couple of new spots!

Lale – Brunch with a Blooming Twist 🌷

Located in the Inner Sunset, Lale (which means “tulip” in Persian) is bright, airy, and adorned with fresh flowers on every table. I visited with friends for brunch, and we were immediately impressed by the presentation – and the flavors didn’t disappoint!

Highlights:

  • Pink beet-yogurt dip with walnuts, garlic, purple flower petals, and pita – a perfect starter, especially with freshly pressed strawberry bellinis.
  • Ricotta-stuffed French toast – ultimate comfort food for a foggy SF morning.
  • Blueberry pancakes – I couldn’t resist.
  • Eggs Benedict – perfectly poached eggs and textures that melt in your mouth.
  • Polenta – my friends loved it, even though it’s not my go-to!

The ambiance, friendly staff, and artistic presentation make Lale a must-visit for brunch. There’s usually a line out the door, so plan accordingly!

Canela Bistro & Wine Bar – Tapas Done Right 🍷

Next up, I took my dad to Canela Bistro & Wine Bar, a Spanish tapas hotspot in the heart of the Castro. Tapas are perfect for sharing and sampling a variety of flavors, and Canela doesn’t disappoint.

Why I loved it:

  • Interior: Elegant, muted décor with intricate details – visually stunning in every direction.
  • Wine: A curated list of top wines under $50.
  • Starters: Olives in a gold dish (classic!), and gazpacho soup shots with feta.
  • Cheese board: Truffle shavings, sourdough, honey, and apple slices – heaven on a plate.
  • Croquettes: Fried, cheesy perfection. If you see these on the menu, don’t miss them!
  • Spanish flatbreads: Baked in their retained pizza oven – authentic and delicious.
  • Scallops: Huge, perfectly cooked, and melt-in-your-mouth.
  • Dessert: Cinnamon espresso ice cream with caramel and whipped cream – the cinnamon elevates it to perfection.

Canela is especially fun on Sundays for Spanish Paella. Paul, the GM, ensures every guest feels cared for – from service to dishes.

San Francisco continues to amaze me with its culinary gems. Whether it’s a flower-filled brunch at Lale or authentic tapas at Canela, both spots deliver on atmosphere, flavor, and unforgettable experiences.
