Gotan in Hoboken: A Mediterranean Gem Worth the Visit

Mediterranean cuisine enthusiasts, take note—Gotan in Hoboken is a place you’ll want to remember. I first discovered Gotan a few years ago in New York, where owner Rami Rosen operated several locations before closing some due to COVID. Another of his ventures, Yuki’s Coffee and Bakery in Hoboken, is just a few steps from Gotan’s largest location to date: a sprawling 5,000-square-foot, two-story space.

The food at Gotan is simply fantastic, and it’s hard to pick favorites. Two dishes stand out for me: the Gotan Breakfast ($16.50) and the Shakshuka ($18). The breakfast includes an egg over easy, a fresh Mediterranean salad, creamy labneh, perfectly roasted potatoes, and a fluffy pita—a combination that’s as satisfying as it is flavorful.

The shakshuka at Gotan offers a unique twist on the classic family recipe I know—a stew traditionally made with roasted peppers, tomatoes, and garlic, often eaten cold. At Gotan, the rich tomato stew is topped with tahini, chimichurri, and pine nuts, and served with two perfectly poached eggs. The result? A heavenly, flavor-packed dish that’s hard to forget.

If sandwiches are more your speed, Gotan delivers there as well. The falafel sandwich is a classic done right, while the halloumi & grilled pepper sandwich stands out as a more inventive option. This combination of roasted halloumi cheese, grilled red pepper, onion, watercress, tahini, parsley pesto, and olive tapenade makes for a flavorful, Mediterranean-inspired bite.

For those craving something more traditional, Gotan also offers hummus and peppers ($16.50)—creamy hummus paired with roasted peppers—and a Mediterranean take on the ever-popular avocado toast ($14.50), topped with feta cheese and fresh mint for a refreshing twist.

Beverage options are simple but satisfying. While coffee and tea are available, my go-to is their spearmint lemonade ($5), perfectly balanced—not too tart, not too sweet.

Here’s a quick visual tour of some of my favorites:

  • Avocado toast – vibrant and refreshing
  • Fluffy pita – soft and perfect for scooping up dips
  • Gotan breakfast – hearty and satisfying
  • Shakshuka – rich, savory, and topped with poached eggs
  • Hummus and peppers – creamy with a subtle sweetness from roasted peppers
  • Halloumi sandwich – bold flavors that meld beautifully
  • Falafel sandwich – crisp and classic
  • Spearmint lemonade – the ideal refreshing companion

Even though Gotan is a bit off the beaten path in Hoboken, it’s a welcome addition to the local restaurant scene. From inventive twists on classic Mediterranean dishes to cozy, inviting vibes, it’s a spot worth visiting again and again.

Enjoy your visit (I certainly did)!
