A Personal Connection to Ireland
“You’ll thank me for this when you’re older!” my mom said years ago, as she helped me get my passport photo taken. She was right – this dual U.S.-Ireland citizenship through my grandmother has become one of my favorite facts about myself.
Years later, cofounding my own social media & influencer marketing company, Royal Horizon Media, gave me the opportunity to combine work with travel. One of our clients, Oak Realty, owns rental properties in Sligo, and we were tasked with a winter trip to capture brand photography and showcase the beauty of Ireland’s West Coast.
Visiting Sligo was a dream come true – full of stunning landscapes, charming towns, and unforgettable experiences.
1. Horseback Riding Along the Beach – Island View Riding Stables 🐴
Yes, you can go horseback riding along the Irish coast! Ursula and her team at Island View Riding Stables offer rides for all experience levels:
- Gentle 30-minute rides for children (4+)
- Scenic 1–2 hour rides suitable for all
- Exhilarating gallops to their private island (for experienced riders only)
The horses roam freely when not working, and Ursula’s knowledge and friendliness make this experience even more special. Bonus: rainy days often bring spectacular rainbows!
2. Gleniff Horseshoe Drive 🚗
A short drive, huge impact. The 6-mile Gleniff Horseshoe Drive offers:
- Lush greenery and mountains
- Sheep and moss-covered stone ruins
- Hidden waterfalls
This scenic drive captures the magical, faerie-like charm of Ireland – and it’s just minutes from Sligo town.

Ireland’s countryside is filled with surprises! During our drive to Sligo, we stumbled upon an easy hiking trail leading to ancient caves and breathtaking views:
- Perfect for golden hour photos

This was a reminder of how grounding and peaceful nature in Ireland can be.

Hooked was a personal favorite – festive decorations, amazing food, and friendly service. Their waiter even shared a list of must-visit spots in Northern Ireland!
